Scripture and Humanity

This message examines how John Calvin and John Wesley viewed and understood the purpose and interpretation of scripture, as well as the role of humanity in living out the faith. John Calvin lived by the phrase "sola scriptura," (solely scripture), and believed in a predestined will for humanity, while John Wesley, who called himself a "man of one book," but was shaped and referenced just about any book in search of knowledge in understanding God and faith. For Wesley, scripture was primary and central, but the wisdom of others was also Spirit-infused. This idea (as well as the idea of the Spirit always being at work) in turn shaped his view of humanity, in that personal experience and reason are part of how God shapes and molds our faith and lives.
